Best Time to Visit Morocco

When to go?

What's the best time to visit some popular areas?

Morocco is at its best in spring (mid-March to May), when the country is lush and green, followed by autumn (September to November) when the heat of summer has eased. Apart from the weather the timing of Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting and purification, is also an important consideration!

2021-2022 Ramadan will commence in the first two weeks of April.

Along the Atlantic coast, the difference between summer and winter is relatively minimal, thanks to cool breezes that temper the summer heat and prevent the winters from becoming too cold; however, seasons have a much greater impact on the interior parts of Morocco.

In the Sahara Desert, temperatures often exceed 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) in summer but may fall to near freezing during winter nights. In terms of rainfall, the northern part of Morocco is considerably wetter than the arid south (especially along the coast). Meanwhile, the Atlas Mountains, located roughly in the middle of the country, have their own climate where temperatures are consistently cooler due to elevation, and in winter, there's enough snow to support skiing and snowboarding.

What's the best time to visit the most popular places?

Agadir

The best time to go to Agadir for a beach holiday or for a holiday in a resort, is from July to September, or even mid-October. In June, the sea is still cold (although it remains very cool also in the following months). In July and August, very hot days can occur. So, all in all, the best month is September. However, morning mists and a bit of cool weather in the evening and in the morning must be put into account throughout the period.
Because of cool evenings and misty mornings, it's better to bring a sweatshirt, even in summer.

What's the best time to visit the most popular places?

Casablanca & Rabat

The best time to visit Casablanca is from April to October, being is a mild or pleasantly warm period, with rare rains, and sunny as well, although there may be some morning fogs. In April, May and October, it can sometimes rain. In this part of the coast, heat waves from July to September are so rare that you can ignore them in your travel plan.
For a beach holiday, you can go from July to September or the first half of October.

What's the best time to visit the most popular places?

Chefchaoune

The best times to visit Chefchaoune are during the spring and autumn months. These months are ideal as the city is not that crowded with tourists during this time and it's not too hot. However, it might rain, so be prepared and don't forget your umbrella.

What's the best time to visit the most popular places?

Essaouira

The best time to visit Essaouira, in search of the remains of its Portuguese or Moorish past, or of the stay of Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley, is from May to October. Given the risk of the albeit rare heatwaves, you can avoid July and August. Even in summer, it is useful to bring a sweatshirt; for those who come from Marrakesh and inland areas, the temperature swing can be considerable and can exacerbate the feeling of cold.

What's the best time to visit the most popular places?

Fes & Meknes

The best times to visit Meknes are spring and autumn, especially the months of April and October, although they are quite rainy. In May, in the first half of June and the second half of September, the heat is generally pleasant or at least bearable, but we can not exclude some days with intense heat due to the desert wind. In mid-summer, in July and August, it depends on the period: sometimes, the heat is bearable, but there are also certain periods of very hot weather.
In June and September, a sweatshirt for the evening can be useful; those who suffer from the cold can bring one even in July and August.

What's the best time to visit the most popular places?

Marrakech

The best times to visit Marrakech are from March to May and between September and November. These shoulder seasons are known for their desirable weather (with average daytime temps in the low 70s to low 90s). Avoid visiting in the brutally hot summer when highs regularly top 100 degrees and the city sees a large influx of tourists and expats. The winter months offer temperatures in the low 40s to upper 60s but also see a spike in tourism, with visitors from colder climates flocking to the Red City in search of warmer temps.

What to pack?

In winter: on both the Atlantic and the Mediterranean coast, bring spring/autumn clothes, a jacket and a sweater, a raincoat or umbrella; for the imperial cities, you can add a warm hat for the evening; for the mountain areas, bring warm clothes, such as a down jacket and gloves; for the desert, bring light clothing, but also a sweater, a warm jacket for the evening, and a scarf for the wind-borne sand and dust.

In summer: on the Mediterranean coast, bring light clothing, and a light sweatshirt for the evening; on the Atlantic coast, especially in Agadir and Essaouira, it's better to add a pair of jeans, a sweatshirt, a light jacket, and a scarf. For inland and desert areas, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing, light and long shirts and pants, a sun hat and a desert turban, sunglasses (even graduated instead of contact lenses), and a sweatshirt for the evening; a sleeping bag for overnight stays outdoors; hiking shoes or sandals. In the mountains, a sweater and a jacket for outdoor overnight stays.
It's better for women to avoid shorts and miniskirts, especially in rural and non-tourist areas.

If you want to visit the imperial cities of Morocco while avoiding hot periods, you can choose spring and autumn, in March-April and from October to mid-November. There may be both cold nights and hot days, but the temperature is generally pleasant, and there are many sunny days, although it can sometimes rain.

For a beach holiday, you can go on the Atlantic coast from July to September, and on the Mediterranean coast in July and August. As mentioned, the waters of the Atlantic Ocean are cool even in summer, especially in the southern part, and fogs and mists may form in the morning along the coast, reducing the hours of sunshine.

In Morocco, the climate is Mediterranean on the coasts, while it's desert in inland areas, and continental in the highest mountains.
